평택학교폭력변호사 이란 정부가 인터넷 통신을 차단하고 반정부 시위를 유혈 진압하는 상황에서 일론 머스크 최고경영자가 이끄는 스페이스X가 위성 인터넷 서비스 ‘스타링크’를 현지에 무료로 제공하고 있다고 블룸버그 통신이 13일(현지시간) 보도했다.
블룸버그는 이란 시민의 인터넷 접근을 지원하는 단체 ‘홀리스틱 레질리언스’ 간부 아마드 아마디안의말을 인용해 스페이스X가 이란 내 스타링크 수신기를 보유한 시민들이 서비스를 무료로 이용할 수 있도록 가입비를 면제했다고 전했다.
이란 정부는 지난해 6월 이스라엘과 ‘12일 전쟁’ 이후 스타링크 사용을 불법으로 규정했지만, 국경을 통해 밀반입된 기기가 5만대 이상 있는 것으로 추정된다. 아마디안은 전국적으로 인터넷 접속이 차단된 상황에서 “스타링크가 시위대의 사망 소식을 세상에 알릴 유일한 수단인 경우도 있었다”고 CNN에 말했다.
이란 정부는 최근에도 스타링크 신호를 방해하고 사용자를 추적 중인 것으로 알려졌다. 이란 국영 IRIB 방송은 이날 당국이 “간첩 및 파괴 공작에 사용된 대량의 전자 장비를 압수했다”고 보도했다. 공개된 영상에는 스타링크 수신기로 포함되는 물품이 포함돼 있었다. AP통신에 따르면 테헤란 북부 주민들은 당국이 위성안테나가 설치된 아파트를 급습했다며 스타링크 단말기를 찾는 것으로 보였다고 전하기도 했다.
스페이스X가 이란 내 스타링크 서비스를 무료 제공하기로 한 사실은 미국 백악관이 전날 도널드 트럼프 미 대통령이 이란 내 인터넷 통신 문제를 두고 머스크와 통화했다고 밝힌 이후 알려졌다. 블룸버그는 “이란을 비롯한 분쟁 지역에서 스타링크 위성 인터넷 서비스가 머스크와 미국 정부의 소프트 파워 도구로 자리매김했음을 보여준다”고 분석했다.
스페이스X는 앞서 러시아의 우크라이나 침공 이후에도 우크라이나군과 민간인들에게 스타링크 서비스를 제공해왔다. 스타링크는 정보 통신 인프라가 파괴된 우크라이나 전장에서 안정적인 통신 서비스를 지원해 위력을 과시하고 있다는 평가를 받는다. 스페이스X는 최근 트럼프 정부가 니콜라스 마두로 베네수엘라 대통령을 끌어낸 뒤 베네수엘라 시민들에게도 다음달 3일까지 무료 인터넷 서비스를 제공하겠다고 밝혔다.
이란에선 반정부 시위가 2주 넘게 이어지면서 사망자가 빠르게 늘고 있다. 미국에 기반을 둔 인권운동가통신은 이날까지 시위가 17일째 접어들면서 약 2000명이 숨진 것으로 파악했다. 영국에 본부를 둔 반체제 매체 이란인터내셔널은 사망자를 최소 1만2000여명으로 추정하기도 했다.
국민의힘 중앙윤리위원회가 14일 당원게시판 사건과 관련해 한동훈 전 대표를 전격 제명했다. 장동혁 대표는 “윤리위 결정을 뒤집고 다른 해결을 모색하는 것은 고려하고 있지 않다”고 말했다. 한 전 대표는 “계엄을 막고 당을 지킨 저를 허위조작으로 제명했다. 장 대표가 저를 찍어내기 위한 것”이라고 반발했다. 한 전 대표 징계를 둘러싸고 국민의힘 내홍이 깊어지고 있다.
윤리위는 한 전 대표 징계 여부를 논의해 이같이 결정했다고 이날 새벽 밝혔다. 윤리위는 “한 전 대표 가족이 당원게시판에 게시글을 작성했다는 사실은 인정된다”며 “정당 대표와 가족이 대통령과 당의 지도부를 공격하고 분쟁을 유발해 국민적 지지와 신뢰를 추락하게 한 것은 윤리적, 정치적으로 매우 중차대한 해당 행위”라고 징계 이유를 밝혔다. 윤리위는 한 전 대표가 당시 당대표로서 그에 따른 정치적·윤리적 책임을 져야 한다고 했다. 다만 윤리위는 한 전 대표의 게시글 작성 여부는 확인하지 못했다며 당에 수사의뢰를 권고했다.
2024년 11월부터 제기된 당원게시판 의혹은 한 전 대표와 그 가족이 국민의힘 익명 당원게시판에 윤석열 전 대통령 부부와 당내 인사들을 비방하는 글을 올렸다는 내용이다. 앞서 국민의힘 당무감사위원회는 지난달 30일 한 전 대표 가족이 당원게시판에 윤 전 대통령 부부 등의 비방글을 올린 것을 확인했다고 발표하고 사건을 윤리위에 송부했다.
한 전 대표는 윤리위 결정 직후 페이스북에 “국민과 함께 민주주의를 지키겠다”는 글을 올렸다. 그는 이날 오후 국회에서 기자회견을 열고 “계엄을 극복하고 통합해야 할 때 헌법과 민주주의를 파괴하는 또 다른 계엄이 선포된 것”이라며 “계엄을 막았을 때의 마음으로 국민, 당원과 함께 최선을 다해 막겠다”고 말했다. 그는 “윤리위 결정은 이미 결론을 정해 놓고 한 것”이라며 “이재명 대통령이 백해룡 경정을 쓰듯이 장 대표가 이호선 당무감사위원장, 윤민우 윤리위원장을 써서 이런 결론을 낸 것”이라 말했다.
장 대표는 이날 기자들에게 “당원게시판 사건은 오래 진행된 사건이고 그사이 많은 당내 갈등도 있었다”며 “지난번 이 문제를 누가 먼저 풀고 가야 정치적으로 해결될지에 대한 제 입장을 말씀드렸다고 생각한다”고 말했다.
